KidsTeam UW eBook v.1.0

UW KidsTeam Anatomy Guidebook

Introduction

KidsTeam UW, led by Dr. Jason Yip, has worked with Seattle Public Library (SPL) for seven years, and has had partnerships with other libraries and organizations. As KidsTeam grows, we have noticed a small problem: do the people we work with fully understand what participatory design is? Co-creating a library program or anything else is at odds with what most people are used to - a hierarchical, teaching structure.

In a typical children’s program at a local library, a librarian or library staff member is in charge of a group of children, leading them through an activity or reading aloud a book. When KidsTeam is co-creating, we are graduate students and designers working with children, as equals, to create something that children will enjoy doing/making in the future.

For participatory design to work, effort needs to be put in to break down imbalances of power between group members. When KidsTeam begins to build new partnerships with libraries and other organizations, there is such a pressure to not overload those staff members with more work, that sometimes there isn’t time or space to really break down the effort that is required to meaningfully participate in co-creating.

This guidebook is aimed at solving that issue, and providing a resource to anyone interested in working with KidsTeam, or just learning about participatory design.

A resource that guides you through creating your own KidsTeam.

Interested in learning how to create a KidsTeam group? With this resource you will be able to learn about how to develop a group and understand the theories behind the structure of KidsTeam. You will be able to uncover the different design methods used in KidsTeam, and will understand what it means to form a design partnership between adults and children. This is currently being developed, so check back for updates!
